About the Book

It's a scandal -- the misguided government policies and overzealous enforcement that have victimized ordinary Americans. That's the story Randall Fitzgerald tells in Mugged by the State. Fitzgerald uncovers example after example of government harassment, including: a woman taken to jail for not wearing a seatbelt; a family diner seized under eminent domain laws; a couple who found army helicopters hovering over their land in a dispute over wetlands; and others.

Fitzgerald, a longtime reporter for Reader's Digest, gives a voice to the countless Americans around the country whose freedoms are being violated by the very government that should be protecting them.

Excerpts from the book:

A Cure in Search of a Problem
The Tennessee Casket Seller
The Arizona Brake Repairman
The Oregon Retirees

What Others Have Said

"I would like to lock in a small, uncomfortable room, the government bureaucrats responsible for the outrages disclosed in Mugged by the State. I would proceed to read excerpts from this fantastic book, glancing up every few minutes to stare them in the eye and demand, 'What were you thinking?' This is a must-read for every American concerned about freedom."
--Neal Boortz, nationally syndicated talk radio host

“Did you know police could confiscate your car in a drug stop without proving you did anything illegal? That bureaucrats could destroy the value of your property without paying you a dime? That local officials could condemn your home and give the land to a millionaire developer? You've heard of big government—now let Randy Fitzgerald introduce you to big, bad government. He tells story after shocking story of ordinary Americans who have been bullied, harassed, injured, and financially ruined by the state. One victim in this book, when she first learned what was being done to her, protested, ‘This can't happen in America.’ After reading Mugged by the State, you'll know that all sorts of things that ‘can't happen in America’ often do.”
--Steve Chapman, columnist, Chicago Tribune
